Pilates – what is it all about?

Developed early in the 20th century, by Joseph Pilates after whom it was named, Pilates is an integrated whole body-conditioning practise

that is designed to lengthen, strengthen, and tone the body. As a low-impact exercise discipline, Pilates is not only fantastic for strengthening muscles, promoting movement control and building endurance, but It is also wonderful for targeting those hard-to-find but important muscle groups for stability and mobility, by working to rebalance muscular imbalances, correcting postural alignment and promoting proper neuromuscular firing.

Who is Pilates Good For?

Everyone!  Whether you’re new to exercise, training for an Iron Man or simply want to undo a day spent chained to your desk and enhance your posture – the benefits of Pilates can be enjoyed by all ages and fitness levels.

I am new to Pilates – which class should I attend?

We recommend that you take our Get Started – Pilates 101 Class. In this 60 minute class we will introduce you to the fundamentals of the Pilates movement practise and ease you into the gentle pre-Pilates repertoire. When you feel ready, you can confidently jump into one of our Align & Balance classes.

Can I attend a private class?

Depending on availability, you can schedule a private or semi-private (max 4 people) session with our instructor by emailing [email protected]

What do I need to bring to class?

All you need is a Pilates mat (a Pilates mats are a little thicker than your traditional yoga mats), some grippy socks if you have them and a water bottle. We have all the necessary props to either facilitate and/or challenge your practise throughout the class.

What should I wear?

We recommend that you wear comfortable clothing that’s not too loose so we can more readily see and adjust your form if necessary during class.

How do I book a class?

The Movement State bookings are managed via the Bookamat scheduling system. To book a class hit the Book Class button, where you will then be directed to an external Bookamat Sign up & login. Please follow the prompts as required.

You may return to the Movement State website at any stage by hitting the Movement State logo icon at the top of the Bookamat scheduling page.
You can also manage your bookings easily on your mobile phone/tablet by saving the Bookamat page to your desktop.

What happens if I need to cancel a class?

We have a 24-hour cancellation policy. We request that you provide 24 hours cancellation notice for regularly scheduled classes as a courtesy to other clients. For cancellations within 24 hours please refer to our cancellation policy (can we link this to the cancellation policy?)
